Verbier Activities - Indoor / Bad Weather

Indoor / Bad Weather Activities in Verbier
If you are unlucky enough to find yourself in Verbier when the rain is pouring and the wind is howling, or if you simply want to have a day off all of those extreme sports you've put your body through, there's no shortage of things for you to do in Verbier. Whether you fancy some pampering at a beauty salon, want to catch a movie at the cinema, or take the kids to the indoor swimming pool; here's a few suggestions to keep you entertained during your stay.
Cinema
The cinema in Verbier is a great option for a rainy day. Rather than being a large ‘multi-plex’ Verbier cinema is probably best described as more of an art-house establishment. Alongside showing the latest films they also put on theatre productions and host brass bands, music conferences and a variety of workshops. As well as showing French and German films they also have a good range of films in English. In fact, if the film was made in English then the chances are it will be shown in its original language with French/German subtitles - a good way to learn a few new phrases!

For contact details and film programmes please see our Museums & Exhibits page.

Fitness & Sports Centre
Verbier Sports Centre is well equipped and offers a host of activities for all ages. As well as having both indoor and outdoor swimming pools there is also a sauna, Turkish bath and solarium for those days when you want a bit of relaxation. Alternatively, you could always work up a sweat on the tennis and squash courts, or venture onto the climbing wall. The centre is also great for kids with a designated children’s play area and an indoor ice rink. Beach volleyball is, bizarrely, quite popular in this part of the Alps and is also catered for here. For further details and contact information please see our Activities to do/Health & Fitness listings.

Museums / Galleries
If you’re a bit of a culture vulture, you can drop in to one of the galleries or museums that are in town. The Val de Bagnes Museum consists of 6 different sites that each reflect different aspects of the areas culture and history. These range from an restored blacksmiths forge, to the Glacier Museum to the Bagnes Museum, which hosts regular art exhibitions alongside its own collection of artifacts.

The Fondation Pierre Giannada in nearby Martigny is also well worth a visit for its collection of ancient historical artifacts, sculpture garden and regular exhibitions of European artworks.

See our Activities to do/Museums & Exhibits listings for further details.

Shopping in Verbier
The shopping in Verbier is excellent but can be expensive; there is a range of exclusive boutiques catering for the wealthier sector of the ‘ski-set’. However, the more modest pocket is also catered for with brands such as Quiksilver, Rip Curl and Patagonia.

Obviously one of the most highly represented shops in town is the sports shop; there is nothing you can’t find related to Alpine sports here in Verbier. Philippe Roux Sport and Médran Sport are amongst the best, but there are many more to choose from depending on what you are looking for.

For some local handcraft head to Bagn’Art to browse the shelves of ceramic and wooden items typical of the Valais region. For more of the local flavour you can stock up on cheeses and cured meats at any of the local epiceries, laiteries or fromageries. Many are happy to let you have a taste before you make a decision so don’t be afraid to ask!

For more practical items, groceries and the like, try Migros or the Co-op. Migros is generally considered cheaper but Co-op offer free delivery.

Although Verbier does not hold its own weekly market you can visit the Tuesday market in Aosta or the Thursday market in Martigny without too much trouble.

For addresses and contact details of Verbier shops visit our Activities to do/Shopping page.

Swimming
Verbier has two swimming pools that are open to the public for stretching out those weary legs after a hard day up the mountain. This is an ideal way to spend the day when the weather forecast isn't looking very promising! The Verbier Sports Centre boasts a heated indoor pool (12 x 25 m), sauna, Turkish bath, indoor ice rink (30 x 60 m), curling, solarium, squash court and climbing wall. There is also the Mondzeu indoor pool (10 x 20 m) which offers hydromassage, sauna and a fitness center. Admission prices are reasonably inexpensive and children are welcome.

For more exclusive surroundings you could try enquiring at some of Verbier's larger hotels. You can sometimes pay a daily visitors rate and take advantage of their spa facilities.

For further details of what Verbier has to offer please visit our Activities to do / Health & Fitness section.

Top tip: Schedule this in for the day after a particularly strenous activity - your aching muscles will thank you for it!
