Christmas in Verbier

Wondering what to do this Christmas in Verbier? The festive season in the snowy Alps is always magical and every year there is some sort of celebration in resort to mark the occasion. Christmas is a far less commercial event than in the UK and so you won’t find things publicised for months in advance - but you can always be sure of a glass of vin chaud (mulled wine), a few carols and perhaps the odd firework or two! Many of the restaurants will put on a special festive menu with champagne and traditional dishes, so book in advance if you want to treat yourself to a meal out.

Cross du Velan, Verbier
Mountain trail race, July
This race starts in the little village of Bourg St Pierre and involves a vertical ascent of 1010 metres over a distance of 6.8 km. The race finishes at Velan, at an altitude of 2642 metres. The race began in 1977 and was dedicated to two local guides, both of whom lost their lives in the mountains.

An international event that see's the best horse riders compete in this prestigious equestrian competition which takes place in the Perrin parking lots by the Sports Center. The infrastructure, which includes an impressive arena, is built to a world class standard attracting both amateur and professional riders.

New Year's Eve, Verbier
NYE, 31st December
Wondering what to do this New Year in Verbier? All the bars hold their own parties, restaurants often lay on a special menu and perhaps some entertainment. Come midnight the hoards of merry revellers head the centre of town for the big countdown – not an official event as such, more of a long-held tradition. On the stroke of midnight you are advised to duck as champagne corks and fireworks are unleashed in celebration!

Since 1891 the 1st of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day and is a is national holiday in Switzerland. The date is inspired by the date of the Federal Charter of 1291, a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.

Trophee des Combins
Trail race, August
This is one of the oldest races in the Alps, dating back to 1965. The course takes runners from Fionnay to the Panossiere hut - a distance of 7.8 km. The course record currently stands at 52 minutes and 56 seconds. All are welcome (children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult).

All types of models are available for testing and there is guidance available from mountain guides and pro riders. End of ski season party, end April
End the season on a high at the Ultimate Party closing day event! Some of the highlights will include big air displays, a waterslide contest, equipment tests and DJ's.

Verbier High Five by Carlsberg
Compete against pro skiers in a range of disciplines
The Verbier High Five is a bit of an institution around these parts and takes place annually on the Verbier pistes. Giant slalom, mini speed ski and ski cross are some of the races that make up the High Five. The event is open to skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers who have the opportunity to compete against professional athletes across all five disciplines.

Verbier Ride
Pro/Am Slope Style Ski Competition
The Verbier Ride is one of the leading freeskiing competitions in the world, incorporating a Skier Cross discipline which has become a recognized X-Games qualifier event, and a Slope Style event which attracts many of Europe’s top freeskiing athletes. The competition takes place in a specially designed course within the La Chaux snow park (Neipark 1936).

XSpeed Ski, Verbier
Final of the Speed Skiing World Championship
Come watch some of the world’s top speed skiers as they fly down Mont Fort’s steep slope in the World XSpeed Ski Open Race finals. The track starts at 3330m and finishes at 2900m, meaning that competitors hurtle down 880m of piste at speeds of more than 200km per hour!
