Sad news this weekend, as a group of Italian ski tourers who were heading to the Grand St Bernard monastery were caught in an avalanche.

A large wind slab avalanche broke free, around 80 metres wide and 2-300m long, burying some of the party in around 2.5m of snow.

Two women and one man died on Saturday, with another man succumbing to his injuries overnight. Of the two other member of the party, one was slightly injured, and the other unharmed.

Forty rescue team members were involved in helping to find the party, all of whom were equipped with avalanche transceivers.

The avalanche rating is back up to 3/5 again after recent snowfall. Please take care if you do decide to go off piste, and ensure you have all the necessary back country equipment with you, as well as knowing how to use it. Read more about avalanche safety here
