Sunshine continues 4th February 2012

Great conditions on and off piste

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 3rd Feb, 2012

On Friday the sunshine came out but only high up in the snow covered mountains of Verbier. Below around 2500m (between Attelas and Ruinettes) a think bank of fog filled the valleys in all directions for as far as the eye could see, giving the impression of islands of snow in a vast ocean.

The temperatures were extremely cold today at just under -20 at Ruinettes and that cold spell is meant to continue through the weekend and get colder.

Thankfully winds are very light as it would be even colder if they were blowing.

The risk of avalanche has stayed at 2 out of 5 which is pretty stable although a large slide a few days ago shut the Planard cat track that allows skiers to return to Verbier from Savoleyres.

Also the Mont Gele sector stayed shut today while maintenance continues. TeleVerbier had said they would give an update in time for the weekend but no news appears to suggest it will stay shut for the weekend at least.

Apart from that the rest of the area is all open and pistes have stayed quiet and in perfect condition, with icy areas forming on lower pistes.

This weekend there is plenty going on up the mountain. Over at Savoleyres there is the Snow Day for Bikes on Saturday. Between 10:00 – 21:00 hrs the luge track is open to all bikes. Check out the following link for more information. http://www.verbierbikepark.ch/snowday4bikes/

Over the weekend the Coop Ski Cross Tour comes to Verbier. Skier Cross is a mix of slalom and freestyle and will take place in La Chaux. The pros will be racing on Saturday and then Sunday is open to anyone who wants to have a go. More information at http://www.verbier.ch/en/calendar/top-events/222881-ski-cross-coop-tour

Also in La Chaux the board park has lots of jumps and rails plus an air bag to go and jump into. With the avalanche training area that is down there too and the brand new restaurant, La Chaux will have a great buzz this weekend.

The weather over the next few days looks to be mainly sunny high up the mountain with very cold temperatures. Some clouds will be around but they will stay in the valleys by the sounds of things. There could also be more snow showers from time to time too so sounds like a perfect weekend.

A break in the weather is on the way

Flat light and snowy conditions stayed in over the middle of the week. This did bring in around 15cm of fresh snow and coupled with the 20cm snow fall at the beginning of the week there is now a great off piste layer out there. Many parts of the mountain have stayed untracked due to the poor light and some lift closures earlier in the week and the forecast for Thursday is for a break in the weather, although conditions are so changeable at the moment it is difficult to forecast with any certainty. ...read more

Lots of new snow : 23rd January 2012

Great conditions with some sunshine forecast

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 23rd Jan, 2012

A fresh snowfall arrived over the weekend. Estimates vary but in resort about 40cm of the fluffy stuff landed on my car. Higher up the mountain there was an initial report of 80cm but on getting up the mountain on Saturday I did not find that depth, partly because it seems as if there has been some very strong wind recently. It has bashed the snow crystals together as they fell and formed very dense wind slab. Interestingly, the top ten centimetres (approximately) is crusted in places with significant amounts of dense chalky snow beneath. ...read more

Up to 80cm of fresh snow arrived on Friday which left much of the higher areas closed on Saturday at the time of writing this. The lifts up to Ruinettes are open, as is the Bruson sector The Savoleyres area should be fully open and with luck by the end of Saturday and into Sunday the areas above that should be too, but Sectors such as Mont Fort and Mont Gele may remain shut for longer. At the moment the links to the 4 Vallees are closed as are all the free ride runs. ...read more

Sun and great snow : 13th January 2012

Where have all the people gone!!

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 13th Jan, 2012

Perfect conditions prevail in Verbier ski area at the moment. All the main ski lifts and areas are open and it is super quiet now that we are well into January. It was not necessary to queue once today and I was able to cover La Chaux, Lac de Vaux, Chassoure to Tortin and Mont Fort sectors and from Attelas down to Le Rouge in a couple of hours. The piste conditions are superb. There are hardly any bumps or big sections of ice as the drop in skier numbers, coupled with the great weather, have meant that there is plenty of space on piste to go fast. ...read more

Sunshine is on the way : 9th January 2012

After days of storms and flat light the lifts are open and sun is forecast

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 9th Jan, 2012

Whilst the majority of the ski area is open at the moment some parts remain closed. Since the big storm before the weekend, which brought in up to 40cm of fresh snow, the Mont Fort lift has not opened and many of the free ride runs have remained shut too. These include Mont Gele and Vallon d’Arbi/ Col des Mines. The Jumbo up to Col des Gentianes, Gentianes to Tortin and the Chassoure to Tortin did all open up too but a lift failure on the Chassoure bubble left many people stranded and in the end each bubble had to be evacuated by helicopter. Also, all cross country and walking routes are currently closed. A level 3 out of 5 risk of avalanche persists as the recent snow came in with very strong winds creating lots of conditions for slab avalanches on all slopes. This level has only just dropped from 4 out of 5 so expect things to still be lively off piste. The weather has also stayed moody with poor visibility and freezing cold temperatures although sunshine is on the way. ...read more

Storms batter Verbier bringing in 50cm of snow : 5th January 2012

So much snow this season I am starting to sound like a broken record

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 5th Jan, 2012

A big storm pushed into Verbier on Thursday bringing strong winds and fresh snow. The high winds, up to 100 km/h at times, closed the links to the 4 Vallees and the higher lifts of Mont Fort and Mont Gele. The threat of avalanche has jumped back up to 4 out of 5 as the wind formed slab on almost all faces and I would expect this risk to stay for Friday at the least and probably into the weekend. This risk also closed all the off piste free-ride runs and it is very important to obey closed signs and wait for the new snow to settle. ...read more
