Sunshine continues : 3rd February 2012
Great conditions on and off piste

On Friday the sunshine came out but only high up in the snow covered mountains of Verbier. Below, around 2500m (between Attelas and Ruinettes), a think bank of fog filled the valleys in all directions for as far as the eye could see, giving the impression of islands of snow in a vast ocean.

The temperatures were extremely cold today at just under -20 at Ruinettes and that cold spell is meant to continue through the weekend, getting even colder.

Thankfully winds are very light as it would be even colder if they were blowing.

The risk of avalanche has stayed at 2 out of 5 (pretty stable) although a large slide a few days ago shut the Planard cat track that allows skiers to return to Verbier from Savoleyres.

Also the Mont Gele sector stayed shut today while maintenance continues. TeleVerbier had said they would give an update in time for the weekend but with no news forthcoming it looks like it will stay shut for the weekend at least.

Apart from that the rest of the area is all open and pistes have stayed quiet and in perfect condition, with icy areas forming on lower pistes.

This weekend there is plenty going on up the mountain. Over at Savoleyres there is the Snow Day for Bikes on Saturday. Between 10:00 – 21:00 hrs the luge track is open to all bikes. Click on the link for more information.

Over the weekend the Coop Ski Cross Tour comes to Verbier. Ski Cross is a mix of slalom and freestyle and will take place in La Chaux. The pros will be racing on Saturday and then Sunday is open to anyone who wants to have a go.

Also in La Chaux the board park has lots of jumps and rails, plus an air bag to go and jump into. With the avalanche training area down there too and the brand new restaurant, La Chaux will be buzzing this weekend.

The weather over the next few days looks to be mainly sunny high up the mountain with very cold temperatures. Some clouds will be around but they will stay in the valleys by the sounds of things. There could also be more snow showers from time to time too. Sounds like a perfect weekend.
