Snowparks in VerbierWhere to go to jib, bonk, spin and pop in Verbier
Freestyle skiing and snowboarding has been growing in popularity since the likes of Glenn Plake and Scott Schmidt brought it to the wolrd in the "Blizzard of Aahhhs". Since then we've seen the birth of snowboarding, the evolution of twin tip skis and snowboards, and the inclusion of freestyle in the winter Olympics.
Freestyle has made household names and millionaires of teenagers with bad hair cuts and tendency towards mono-syllabic conversation. If you are new to the slopes it's a good chance that you'll be wanting to try your first kicker or rail soon. If you have been skiing or snowboarding for a while then it's more likely that you have tried you first kicker or rail and realised exactly why those rubber-limbed freestyle monkeys make the money they do. It's hard and it can hurt. But freestyle is great fun and if you want to learn there is no better place to head than the Verbier park.
The La Chaux Park in Verbier is, as the name implies, in the La Chaux sector directly under the Chaux Express chairlift. Kickers, rails and even an airbag feature in the Verbier park which sits in a natural sunny bowl. The park is sponsored by Swatch and features a camera system that allows visitors to have their run through the park and on the airbag filmed and then shared on line.
The park is used each year as the host for Verbier Ride competition and although the park is shaped specifically for that competition it maintains a similar lay out for the rest of the season with some pretty sizable kickers and technical rails.
The best thing to do is to treat the park like a piste; ski within your limits and progress at a steady controlled pace. Although anyone with a lift ticket can ride in the park it can seem like a daunting place, riding safely and in the proper fashion should help keep you safe.
