The end is nigh : 27th April 2012

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 27th Apr, 2012

With only two days left until the lifts close for good and winter grinds to a halt this weekend is the time to start cramming like I did for my A-Levels back in the day. Hopefully your ski cramming will be more successful than my poor attempt to cram 2 year of scribble into my distracted mind. Verbier has great cover from mid station upwards and the snow cover and quality higher up the mountain is really good as it has snowed on and off for the last couple of weeks.

The weather has got much better recently after the cold winter weather broke and allowed a good amount of sun to come out. The temperatures have also jumped back up and today at Medran it had climbed to +16 by the afternoon. This has kept the risk of avalanche high at 3 out of 5 and sadly an avalanche claimed the life of a local skier, caught in an avalanche between Gentianes and Tortin. Strong winds high up the mountain have stripped cols bare and deposited large amounts of snow on many slopes so extreme caution should be exercised if off piste skiing or ski touring through the mountains. NW-N-NE facing slopes above 2500m are especially dangerous as the recent strong wind, that has come from the south, has deposited slab on many slopes. Lower down, a sudden rise in temperatures, a high freezing level and some rain showers as high as Ruinettes may cause wet avalanches too over the weekend. With great powder and dangerous conditions side by side in the mountains anybody venturing off piste should be properly equipped and have experience with those types of conditions. Consider taking a guide as there is some great snow within easy reach of the lifts and a guide can sniff out the safest spot. Otherwise relax and cruise the pistes as there is good cover all the way to where 1936 bar used to be. The lower slopes below Ruinettes are obviously a little slushier than higher up but hopefully the Medran path back to resort will stay open but sticky until the end of the weekend.

On Saturday the last competitors from the PDG race will be arriving in town after their epic ski trek/race from either Zermatt or Arolla. Lifts are meant to be open from 4am in the morning to allow spectators up the mountain to support the skiers as they arrive and finish the final leg of their race which involves running from Medran at the top end of town to the sports centre at the bottom end.

Currently the Savoleyres and Bruson sectors are closed and the lower slopes and lifts below Ruinettes are also shut. The rest of the area is a bit more complicated. The links to the 4 Vallees were meant to close last weekend but then remained open for the PDG race. They have kept closing and opening through the week due to maintenance issues (Lac 3) and bad weather/ avalanche risk (Mont Fort and the off piste free ride runs such as Mont Gele, Gentianes and Chassoure). On Friday the strong winds had shut the Mont Fort sector but on the website the Gentianes red run, back to La Chaux, was open (as the PDG competitors arrive over the Col de la Chaux and come down the Gentianes piste to La Chaux. If the glacier area is going to open at 4am on Saturday, which they are still advertising, but the weather forecast is remaining the same as previous days then I have no idea until I get up there to see myself and I suggest you do the same.

On Sunday from 10:30am the Ultime Festival will be held in La Chaux. This end of season celebration sees a giant water slide created for people to ski across, live music, food and drink. The park is still in great condition for trying those last ditch tricks due to its’ slushy nature.

Whatever you do this weekend you will find reasonable snow, pretty good weather and quiet pistes. I know that is not a very good sales pitch but here at Verbinet we tell you it how it is, not how we want it to be. I’ll be posting my last written report and video report this weekend and then after that I promise to leave you alone to ponder the tranquillity of Spring alone.

The Swiss army occupies Verbier : 26th April 2012In order to organise the PDG competition

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 25th Apr, 2012

Over the last week the unsettled weather has stubbornly refused to stabilise and instead has brought in some sunshine but also colder temperatures clouds and periods of flat light. There has also been more snow with around an extra 30-40cm accumulating over the last four days. Up on the glacier, Backside of Mont Fort, Stairway and Highway the snow is still in great condition with fresh tracks still to be had. Lower down the pistes still have very good cover although the cat track back to Medran is only just open and most other lower runs and lifts are now closed. ...more

Great powder and quiet pistes : 22nd April 2012Still more powder days to come

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 22nd Apr, 2012

With the weather so unsettled over the last couple weeks it looked as if the last week of the season was going to stay cloudy with flat light and mist stubbornly flowing up the valley. Thankfully the weather did break over the weekend and although some clouds remained, especially in the afternoons, the mornings were clear and sunny. ...more

15cm of new snow falls : 11th April 2012More snow is on the way!

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 11th Apr, 2012

Having just had 10cm of new snow a couple of days ago, a new front came whizzing in over Tuesday night and dropped another 10-15 cm above Ruinettes. The temperatures have risen and fallen dramatically over the last week but over Wednesday it was quite mild. In resort the 5cm that did fall did not lie on the roads and started to settle and melt quite quickly. Up the mountain the new snow is very welcome as it disguises the many brown areas that have been showing through the snow over the past week. ...more

April turns into a snowy & rainy month : 9th April 2012Snow continues to fall

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 8th Apr, 2012

Snow continues to come and go bringing in a mixture of clouds and sunshine and some very variable conditions up the mountain. The temperatures have dropped quite significantly as a cold wind has blown in with the recent moody weather. At times it has been wet and humid, especially lower down the mountain where rain and sleet has been falling. The good news is that this sulking front has brought in around 10cm of fresh snow around Lac de Vaux and Mont Gele and up to 15cm on the higher parts of the mountain. The freezing level has been bouncing around 2000m over the last week and that has meant that at times rain has been falling as high as Attelas. This rain and wet snow has frozen solid from below Attelas and all the way down to resort. Up in Lac de Vaux the powder on Sunday morning was superb and it was super quiet as most people had decided to stay at home. Over at Savoleyres the low altitude has kept the pistes sticky from Thursday and the main band of clouds hovered over there and the Ruinettes areas. ...more

Snow arrives in resort : 6th April 2012More snow on the way

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 6th Apr, 2012

The weather over the last few days has been very mixed with snow falling on Thursday. Initial projections fell well short as higher parts of the mountain received only around 10cm. On Thursday I was up at Savoleyres and found 2-5 centimetres of heavy, sticky snow which was not much fun to ride. In fact on my way to Tzoumaz it got so sticky that I pulled out half way down and caught the lift back up to the top. ...more

Snow is coming! : 4th April 2012Initial forecast of half a metre revised to 10cm

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 4th Apr, 2012

There has been a real change in the weather over the last couple of days. Gone are the spring conditions with high temperatures and heaps of sunshine. Instead the weather is going to be unsettled well into the weekend, with the promise of snow. The forecast has been downgraded from 40cm to 10cm in a day so it does not look too significant but is very welcome all the same. The pistes have been bearing up very well with the cat tracks back to Verbier still well passable. Le Rouge is now shut as is the Moulin nursery slope and at the current 'rate of melting' Les Esserts will not last much longer either. Higher up the mountain, especially around Lac de Vaux and the Mont Fort sector, it still feels like winter and the runs are in much better condition. La Chaux also has good cover but gets a lot of sun through the day so it does get very slushy, like the runs from Attelas through Ruinettes and down to Mayentzet. The park in La Chaux is in great condition for beginners. With soft kickers and landings it much less intimidating than previous months. There is also an air bag kicker at the bottom of La Chaux. So there is no excuse not to practice some freestyle moves over the coming weeks. ...more

Snow is on the way : 1st April 2012as much as half a metre is forecast

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 1st Apr, 2012

Although the sun has been beating down on Verbier for more than a month and temperatures have remained high the snow cover is surprisingly good throughout the area. Only the lower slopes to Medran and Les Esserts beginner slope are affected but brown patches abound throughout the mountain. The Moulin piste, Planard cat track and Le Rouge piste are all closed now as there is not enough snow to cover those areas. In the mornings the pistes are well groomed but solid due to the clear nights. By the afternoon the high temperatures turn the pistes a little slushy with pistes below Ruinettes particularly affected. The same conditions are present off piste where the risk of avalanche has dropped to 1 out of 5. The spring snow is bullet proof in the morning but slushy by the afternoon. The risk of avalanche could rise on these slopes by the afternoon as the sun starts to heat the slopes up. The snow is still in great condition higher up the mountain on the more shaded parts of the mountain. On Gentianes, Chassoure and Mont Fort the bumps are frozen for most of the day and the temperatures high up are more comfortable than lower down where the temperatures are often as high as 15 degrees Celsius. ...more

Eternal sunshine and the Carlsberg High Five : 29th March 2012Last snow report in March

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 29th Mar, 2012

Sunshine continues to provide really hot and sunny conditions which have sent the pistes of Verbier into a downward spiral of melt and re-freeze, which continuously melts snow away bit by bit. That being said there is still good cover on most slopes with just the runs to Medran and Le Rouge and the lower beginner areas such as Les Esserts and Marmottes turning a bit green. ...more

Spring returns with a vengeance : 22nd March 2012Fresh snow provides some welcome powder turns

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 21st Mar, 2012

After the snowfall of a few days ago the sun came back out and spring returned with a vengeance. High temperatures and lots of warm sunshine have melted whatever snow fell in resort and higher up the mountain the brown patches have already broken back out. That said, there is still very good cover throughout the area and all the lifts are open with a few minor exceptions. The new snow, around 15-20cm, transformed quickly in the afternoon heat and became heavy very quickly. By Wednesday the snow had almost totally changed, especially on lower sun facing slopes, such as the Attelas face. Much better powder can be found higher up the mountain on the more shaded slopes of Mont Gele, Mont Fort, Gentianes, Chassoure, Vallon d’Arbi and Stairway to Heaven. ...more

Snow has finally returned after a month of sunshine and warm temperatures. As much as 20cm is forecast over the next couple of days. The winds are expected to stay moderate while the snow arrives which should mean that the risk of avalanche will not rise too high.  Currently it is at 2 out of 5 but sign up to our dump alerts to find out the latest information on snowfall and lift and piste openings as they happen. ...more

Snow is on the way : 17th March 2012Beautiful weather gives way briefly

by Lee Fieldsend | | published: 16th Mar, 2012

Spring weather continues with temperatures reaching 23 degrees in town. The sun is hot, wind light, skies blue and the freezing level high (up to 3000m). This great weather is set to be checked by a front of mixed weather which is forecast to arrive over the weekend. This will bring in a predicted 20cm of new snow which is very welcome for this time of the year. The temperatures are going to stay quite mild, although they will be cooler than usual. Even though the recent high temperatures have created a melt-freeze cycle which has de-graded the snow there is still really good cover throughout the area. There are some patches starting to appear but a little new snow should cover them up. ...more
