Fly from London to Verbier

Test flights have begun to Sion airport from London Heathrow

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Verbier Editor Updated

This weekend the very first direct flight from London Heathrow to Sion airport, on the outskirts of Verbier.

Previously Sion Airport was used by the Swiss military but since they're now no longer using the airport, Helvetic Airways have been give the go ahead this month to run a series of test flights. The head of Valais tourism confirmed that the first flight was 80% full, a great success and that they are planning to add more flights from the UK in time for next winter.

Flights to Sion would also benefit those heading to Zermatt, which is also in the Valais region. It would take around 1 hour from Sion airport, compared to transfer times of 2-3 hours from either Geneva or Bern. People staying in Nendaz, Veysonnaz and La Tzoumaz would also benefit.

If the test flights continue to be a success and the cost of operating them stack up, then we could see a lot more UK flights heading this way.

Update 15th February

PowdAir have just announced that they will be launching a dedicated route to Sion from December 2017. They are planning flights 5 day per week and are looking for your feedback on which airports to fly from.
