How to travel to Verbier without flying

The easy way to travel to Verbier without flying

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Verbier Editor Updated

If planes just aren't your cup of tea and you'd rather stay on terra firma to travel, there are plenty of ways to travel to Verbier for a ski holiday, or at any other time of year for that matter.

Go by Coach

Gone are the days of cranky old buses, these days you can expect to travel in style in a modern coach with adjustable seats, TV or DVD players, air conditioning and hot and cold drinks on board. You don't have to be at your departure point hours in advance of leaving either, and there are no lengthy queues waiting for baggage to arrive on a carousel as it's all carried with you.

The best part about arriving by coach is that since you travel overnight you arrive in the resort ready to ski straight away and there's often a full extra day at the end of the week to ski, which you most likely wouldn't have if you were travelling by plane. Hop off the coach, collect your ski gear and away you go! Some coaches also offer a seat upgrade to Club class so you get even more room to stretch out - we recommend you book early for this service as places are often limited.

Coaches typically depart from London Victoria, Folkestone, Thurrock & Maidstone Services - the exact location depends on the company you travel with and your ski destination. Ski Weekends offer not only weekends, but mid week and week-long trips to either Morzine or Meribel by coach. Snow Express have a choice of 40 different destinations across the French Alps and have teamed up with Action Outdoors to offer accommodation in a selection of these resorts.

Go by Train

Travelling by train might involve a few more changes on route than you'd normally get by flying to Verbier, but you have the added benefit of not having to pay for baggage and someone else is doing the driving, so you can completely switch off and relax, or catch up on emails.. the choice is yours. From the UK you can pick up a connection and join the Eurostar Ski train to a large number of ski resorts, or make use of the SnowCarbon journey planning which you will find with more information about travelling by train on our National Train services page. The night trains to Bourg St Maurice and from Paris to St Gervais will potentially cease operating on 1st July 2016, so if you want to experience it, this season is the time to do it!

Self Drive

Taking your car (or motorbike) with you on holiday gives you absolute freedom to go where you want, when you want. Stop off on the way, or don't. Go the scenic route or go direct, the choice is yours. Just remember to take a paper map with you as sat navs aren't always guaranteed to get you to your destination... Car pool

A couple of car-pooling websites have caught our eye are Mountain Rideshare and Blah Blah Car. They both operate on roughly the same basis; you can either offer a seat in your car, or look for a ride from someone to pretty much any given destination. The catch is finding the right person going in the same / similar destination to you, but the plus sides are that you can share the costs and keep your carbon footprint down at the same time.
