Verbier Apres Ski Report: 13th January 2012

Blue skies and skittles

featured in Nightlife reviews Author S H, Updated

So, as we roll further into January this week, a time most like to reserve as a period of rest for their wallets and their livers, Verbier is showing no sign of letting up at all. And what a week it’s been. January blues have arrived in the best way possible - in the skies. The heavy blizzards and snowfall that dominated the reports last week moved along on Sunday, and made way for beautiful bluebird days and some incredible skiing conditions.

Naturally with blue skies and sunshine, come terraces, tunes and après ski – and that is exactly what has been rocking in the village this week with the improvement in the weather. Le Rouge has had its terrace open-air all week, serving Happy Hour prices on beers and wines from Monday to Thursday 3pm-4:30pm. When the sun is out and the house DJs Niko and G are working their magic, there aren’t many better places to be enjoying a hard earned drink in the mountains. If you’re feeling in the mood to ramp up the party (or if you happen to bump into Johnny Tables), then ask Emma behind the bar to knock you up a round of her famous Skittle Bombs. Yes, for the astute ones amongst us, they taste exactly like Skittles – you’ll just find it harder to pick out the blue ones! If Bloody Mary’s are your thing, and you’re feeling a little fragile after a heavy Saturday night, then Le Rouge have their Lazy Sundaze on offer from 3pm to help nurse you back to health.

Live music has been provided all week in Apres Ski @ The Farinet by Caligagan, with the inevitable table dancing and beer swilling that accompanies it. Tuesday night was as popular around town as ever, as most seasonaires in Verbier celebrate their hard earned day off. The Loft hosted a very busy pre party from 10pm, warming up for the ladies to most certainly ‘Rock the Night’ at Casbah. Djette Ladyfuchs, Djette Pompet and DJ Izzy Lawrence all showed the crowds a good time and there were plenty of grinning party punters at the end of the night. Congratulations also go out to DJ Liam Major, the winner of the first edition of Battle of the DJs in Casbah on Wednesday. T-Bar was offering more live music this week as well, with Faye and Wrightside playing from 9:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

If you have been focusing on enjoying the skiing this week, and a break from the slopes is called for then I can highly recommend popping along to Chez Dany - whether it be to warm up the hands with a chocolat chaud, or enjoy a cool glass of wine in the sunshine on their terrace. The pumpkin soup is a must, served thoughtfully in a hollowed-out bread roll… the perfect hearty meal to warm you up and reenergize you when the conditions are so good!

This Saturday and Sunday sees the Ultimate Test tour come to Verbier – please do take advantage of the Freeride Fair to test the latest equipment produced by real specialists. Some of the models are completely unique! There are various types of test packs to be tried, from a simple kit test to a day out accompanied by a guide so that you can freeride in perfect safety!

So to the week ahead, here’s a round up of the best runners and riders to get alongside in town. Tonight sees the Cruzaders perform live in Public from 11pm onwards. Saturday is the opening party of the inside of the Club at Le Rouge – it kicks off from 3pm with house DJs and the big reveal of the new name! The Loft presents ‘The Stripe Party’ this Sunday 15th January from 10pm – so, in the magical words of The Loft themselves, ‘get on your best striped clothes and go stripe crazy!’ To go stripe crazy is something Johnny Tables does not need to be asked twice – look forward to seeing his outfit. Casbah is where Sugarfree gets dirty on Tuesday night, mixing a fine selection of Dubstep and Breakz from 12-4am – and then Casbah plays host to the next round of Battle Of The DJs on Wednesday night (this week all DJs will be mixing using vinyl’s only) starting from 11:30pm sharp and will definitely be worth a look. So another busy week in the pipeline, but save up some of that stamina, as Brandon Block will be behind the decks on Friday at Casbah! Who said January had to be quiet? JT certainly hasn’t.

Happy weekend – hope you all have a great one.
