Verbier Apres Ski Report: 9th February 2012

Piste & Love

featured in Nightlife reviews Author S H, Updated

With the crowds of half term just around the corner, everyone in Verbier has been rushing out to brave the biting cold and squeeze in as much skiing as possible before the lift lines inevitably swell next week. We’ve been made to work for it though, as iced toes and nostril freeze have become standard feelings for those up the mountains.

As the temperatures have tumbled, so have the crowds drinking and dancing out on the terraces. Le Rouge’s sun terrace has been noticeably quieter this week as people have been more concerned with defrosting than topping up their tans. As a result the indoor bar La Luge has been squeezing in the après crowds determined not to be put off from the great tunes. Madison have been back at Apres Ski @ Farinet playing their mix of 80s and 90s rock classics all week – with the Argentinian 4-piece also throwing in some of their own Spanish tracks to mix it up. They are here until 13th February when Waste take over the stage for the next week.

Greg Myers wowed the weekend crowds on Saturday night in Farinet Lounge and Casbah for Hed Kandi. By now, those tuning in regularly shouldn’t need me to re-echo just how popular every Saturday night always is there. Sunday saw Verbier Seasonaires host the Lampshade party at the Loft, with some pretty serious ‘lamping’ of all shapes, sizes and colours. In typical fashion, JT graced the party sporting a crystal chandelier over his head. Course he did. Altitude Ski and Snowboard School and the Pub Mont Fort came together to present sports night on Tuesday, with games, music and fancy dress lined up for seasonaires. Girls took over at the Loft and Casbah also on Tuesday night - rocking the decks were Djette Ladyfuchs and Djette Pompet. DJ Roberta made a guest appearance in the Rockbah, and, as anyone who was there will testify, was quite the sight!

By day, some of the best tree skiing in Verbier can be found just over the other side of the valley in Bruson. Even more reason then to take a trip over this Saturday and watch the 2012 Dahu Bruson Freeride competition – a springboard for the qualifying rounds of the World Tour. Runs start from 10:30am and then continue non-stop until the middle of the afternoon. Don’t miss the afterparty as well, at Dzardy’s Bar in La Chable from 4pm carrying on until 2am, with a traditional Dahu BBQ, a freeride movie screening and a live concert. Come on down.

After some great and not so great displays of rugby last weekend in the Six Nations, the next round of matches are here on Saturday and Sunday with all 3 games being shown in the T Bar, Loft and Pub Mont Fort. Krystal Roxx returns for the first time this month to play at Hed Kandi in Farinet Lounge on Saturday. The Croquignoles plays host to the Shot Party on Sunday – the next event of the season presented by Verbier Seasonaires. Find yourself a flyer and present it at the bar for a free shot, with great prices on beer and wine all night.

Whether you love it or loathe it, the unavoidable Valentines Day comes around again on Tuesday. There’s good news if you’re looking for love on the slopes, as the Verbier Singles Day provides a great way to celebrate the day. Leave your phone number with them and blind dates will be organized throughout the day – enjoy aperitif drinks and a meal and meet your speed date on a chairlift! If your skills on the mountain haven’t quite managed to do the trick, then the day ends with a concert at the Medran Café (under the main lift). For more info contact info@verbiersportplus.ch

There are frankly a daunting number of restaurants of varying price and quality around town if a romantic dinner is what you are looking for - so here are a few options that are available to all you romancers out there. For the more cheesy lovers, Le Caveau, in Place Centrale, is a top spot if you fancy gazing into each other’s eyes over a raclette. Sonalon, above Savoleyres, offers a more meaty option where you can wine and dine your lucky date over a classic Chateaubriand. If you’re feeling a little more flash, then book a table at Chalet Adrien, where the food is amazing but won’t be kind on your wallet. Johnny has reserved several. Whether he shows up to one, some, or all of his Valentines dates we’ll have to wait and see.

Casbah is celebrating Valentines Day with a traffic light party – turn up wearing a colour to represent your availability. I shouldn’t need to explain which colour represents which! Public also have a Valentines Party, and don’t forget the photo booth is there to capture that ‘special moment’ if you happen to find your valentine.

If you missed the first performance of the Verbier Panto – Three Little Pigs – this Wednesday, then make sure you snap up a ticket for the final show next week on 15th February. Drinks and refreshments are available and all proceeds go to charity. Pick up one of the hot tickets from T-Bar or European Snow Sports desk in Mountain Air – the reviews have been glowing!

Over and (let's go) out!
