Verbier Apres Ski Report: 20th January 2012

Powder & Pint Skis

Apparently there’s a front coming in from the north this weekend (steady Johnny). For you non-meteorologists out there, allow me to translate: Snow. Most people in Verbier have forgotten what clouds look like as the blue skies have stayed in force this week. But times they are a-changin’, with a load of fresh stuff forecast to be delivered this weekend. Happy days.

With all the sunshine of the past week, people have been firmly in the party mood, moving and shaking around town in all the favourite spots. The opening of the inside club at Le Rouge last Saturday went off with a flurry of sparklers and aptly coloured shots. Guess who was there getting a bit over excited with the sparklers? La Luge – as it is now called – was packed full of weekenders and certainly a great time was had by all. There was some great live music played by Jess in T Bar on Tuesday night and later on Rob Sugarfree Solari most certainly got down and Dirty at Casbah, banging out some epic dubstep and breaks. Public’s photo booth has been as popular as ever this week, particularly when the crowds are fuelled with their weird and wonderful selection of cocktails – definitely give The Warhead a go next time you’re there.

Spy Glass are the band that have been rocking Apres Ski @ Farinet all this week from 5pm, check them out before they leave town. The infamous shot ski and pint ski have been out in regular occurrence. Get four of you together, line up four pints of beer, and race to see who can see it away the quickest when they are attached to a ski. Simple. Little tip for anyone queuing up to give it a go, try and find three friends of a similar height – otherwise shorty will (amusingly for everyone else) get a face full of beer!

For those more partial to a glass of wine while in Verbier, I urge you to pop down to Cav&Art. Relax and unwind in their cosy bar between 4pm – 10pm and taste some fine wines accompanied by delicious antipasti and locally sourced delights and then choose a bottle to take away. Bernaud and Amy are very friendly and can guide you through some fantastic local wines. For larger parties, Bernard can also bring the experience to your chalet so you won’t even have to leave your sofa.

Unfortunately the Verbier Ride event that was originally scheduled for this weekend, has had to be postponed because of the snow that is due to sweep in. Kickers and spines don’t build themselves (unfortunately), and there just won’t be enough time to construct the course with the incoming dump. But no fear, they are working on rescheduling for later in the season. If somehow this means you’re twiddling your thumbs while in the mountains, then new this year is the Ice Cube, located in a great spot at Ruinettes at the top of the Medran lift with views across the valley. They serve great value sandwiches and a wide selection of drinks as well as providing complimentary Wi-Fi. To top it off they have DJs playing great tunes while you lie back and relax on the terrace.

So, onto next week. Hed Kandi will be back as always in Farinet Lounge and Casbah this Saturday – this week DJ Krystal Roxx will be entertaining the inevitable crowds. Tuesday sees a Zombie Invasion at Pub Mont Fort and Casbah – they have announced that after an outbreak of chalet girl disease which caused mass death and misery in Verbier, the dead will be re-animated for one night. Fancy dress is essential. It’s a week to honour nationalities, with Le Rouge celebrating Burn’s Night on Wednesday from 3pm, Pub Mont Fort has an Australia Day party on Thursday, and it is Jamaican night in Casbah later that evening with Idren Sound. Feel da rhythm, feel da ride.

Head to the hills – here comes the snow!
