Verbier Apres Ski Report: 17th December 2012

Our favourite snowy bubble fills with more festive fun

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Angus Griffin, Verbier Reporter Updated

As we edge closer and closer to the Christmas period, our snowy bubble is becoming filled with more and more festive fun. With two more brilliant parties thrown by Bluebird Seasonaires, a film premiere and the first sport highlight of the season, this week has certainly lived up to the high standards set last week.

A few more sunny days have made parts of this week picture-perfect as more and more people flock to the mountain. It’s been a great start to the season – one of the best in years – and this has meant that weekends in the resort have already become packed with snowsports fanatics. Tuesday saw cloud in the town, but those who ventured up high cleared the bad weather, and were met with clear visibility and some great fluffy stuff. Wednesday was possibly the best day of the season so far with pistes drenched in sun. The weekend saw more snowfall and with sun planning to treat us to more bluebird days during the middle of next week, nothing seems to be stopping the fun.

Another great week for evening frolics, Bluebird Seasonaires took over The Loft Bar on Tuesday evening and then T Bar on Thursday to announce the launch of their Bluebird Seasonaire Discount Card. Both bars were flooded with people as the drinks flowed and the people danced. T Bar hosted Stevie Appleton, a talented one-man show, who played some popular covers such as Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash and tracks by Eric Clapton. Smashing the jazzy vibe, he took on these classics with flair and confidence and turned them into blues-infused pop songs. With plenty of people emerging fresh from apres fun, others came down for evening drinks, and all were met with an electric atmosphere.

Saturday night saw the Finale Premiere of ski film Few Words at the 4 Valley’s very own Cinéma de Verbier . Presented by the world famous but Verbier based freeski manufacturers Faction Skis, the freeskier Candide Thovex and Quiksilver, it is Thovex’s first feature length production and delves into the life and accomplishments of the French professional skier. The production combines talented cinematography with some epic footage of both big-mountain freeriding and jaw-dropping freestyle set to a beautiful backdrop. A great turn-out for the premiere saw the pop-up Faction bar crammed full of excited movie-goers exchanging expectations. As the show came to a close, the inspired crowd agreed that this was a must-see film. With a release date yet to be confirmed, it has been promised to be available on DVD and iTunes some time in mid-December.

A slightly chillier option, the Trophee Verbier Sports Plus on Saturday evening provided some energetic antics in the form of ski tour racing. Starting at Carrefour and finishing at the top of Attelas, just watching the race was enough to have you gasping for breath. Valentin Favre won the Elite Senior category and Jennifer Fiechter took first place in the Elite Dames category.

In terms of the coming weeks events, once again holiday-makers and seasonaires alike are treated to a week of wintry revelry. The Seasonaire’s Welcome Party at Casbah on Tuesday 18th December will be a night of foot-stomping partying and with the promise of a free welcome drink before 1am, get there early to avoid disappointment. The club opens at 12 and closes at 4am and there will be a DJ set from Verbier’s very own DJette Ladyfuchs.

As much as night-time revelries are a key part of the 4 Valleys, it is also important to remember snowsports safety. The mountain can be a powerful force so get yourself fully prepared for whatever the conditions by heading to Pub Mont Fort on Wednesday 19th December at 19:00 for a free avalanche safety lecture. Lasting around 45 minutes, the Avalanche Academy will cover many of the important aspects of safe travel in the backcountry.

If the Mayans are right, Verbier will no longer exist as of the end of this week, so why not head down to Pub Mont Fort on Friday 21st December, the eve of doomsday, to party your socks off at the End of the World Party. The apocalyptic dress code for the event is “what you would wear on your last day” and there promises to be some outrageous costumes.

As we get nearer to the Christmas period the resort is really beginning to get into full flow. Our favourite white powder continues to fall, the partying continues and the festive fun hits dizzy heights. Don’t forget to check our events pages for an update of what’s on in resort this week.
