Verbier Apres Ski Report: 4th April 2013

The beginning of the end...

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Angus Griffin, Verbier Reporter Updated

If like us, you feel that this season has sped by like a downhill racer, then there’s only one thing to do – make the most of the last few weeks that remain! Go to that restaurant you could never afford to go to, ask that lovely looking lady you see every morning on the chairlift out for drinks, and attempt that double backflip that’s been itching away at the back of your mind this winter.

As we edge closer and closer to the end of the season, it means only one thing: the beginning of the closing parties. With many yet to be announced (don’t worry we will keep you all fully updated!), it is with a tear in the eye but an excited beating in the heart that we announce The Lounge Closing Party. The them is “What The F&%k Are You Wearing?” and you know what that means - anything goes! Expect to see some crazy gear – it’s the perfect excuse to expose that treasure you never felt brave enough to rock. The Lounge has been pretty good to us this season, giving us party after party, so why not wave it good-bye in style? Be prepared kids, it’s going to be emotional.

If five months of ‘Seasonaire Tuesdays’ are beginning to drag, Mardi Blah at Le Rouge is guaranteed to get you up on your feet. With Le Rouge’s expert choice of DJs spinning some euphoric house, it’s different, atmospheric and buzzy. Last week saw guest DJ Reflect Academy make an appearance. Supported by DJ Niko and DJ Hoaxy, the A-team of Verbier’s house music scene really blew the roof off. Often not getting going until 10:30, it’s the perfect place to end up after supper and this week’s session is the last one of the season. So if you haven’t made it up there yet, strap on your dancing shoes and go see what all the fuss is about. As Le Rouge themselves explain: miss it and miss out!

Yesterday saw Richard Branson’s The Lodge and ES Verbier host The Scavenger Hunt. Consisting of two stages, there were four competitions ranging from timed races to fun ‘speed-drinking’ competitions. Stage one saw teams perform synchronized snow angels, construct a Richard Branson snowman, have a team photo with a cow and run a timed pole race at Ruinettes. Stage two asked teams to down a ‘ski shot’, ski 20 meters in nothing but underwear, draw one of three charity logos in the snow, perform a mini Harlem Shake and finally, complete a team boat race at T-Bar. Results came in as follows: veteran skiers Ski Club Great Britain secured the winning spot with a time of 4 hours and 24 minutes, whilst Smoking Hot Verbier Mamas took second (4 hours, 32 minutes) and UK Fast took third (4 hours, 36 minutes). There was also a Best Dressed award that went to the aptly named, Clowning Around. The post-ski party and prize giving was at T-Bar and the lively antics were soundtracked by The London Essentials and none other than acoustic-legend, Faye.

If you fancy a day off from skiing, why not see the mountain from the dizzy heights of a paraglider. Throwing yourself off the side of a piste might go against every inch of human instinct in your body, but trust me, it’s certainly worth it! As the thermals sweep you up, it’s difficult to find anywhere else that gives you the sense of peace and tranquility experienced whilst floating weightlessly in the skies. Tandem flights start up the mountain and slowly descend to the valley floor, and the great thing about it is anyone of any age or ability can fly. There are a number of qualified flight schools to choose from but one of the most popular has to be Verbier Summits. Sponsored by Peak Performance, it’s run by two brothers, Mike and Stu, who have years of experience between them. Tandem flights are only 160CHF and you can even opt to catalogue your thrills through video and photography. In all honesty, there’s no better way to enjoy the stunning mountain panorama we all treasure than circling amongst the birds - so leave your rationality at home and take to the heavens!

Not long left now everybody so make the most of the snow and sunshine and don’t forget to check out our events calendar to see what Verbier has to offer…
