Verbier Apres Ski Report: 7th March 2013

Spring edges its way to Verbier

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Angus Griffin, Verbier Reporter Updated

As the snowy blanket begins to lift off our mountain home, spring seems to be on the way. But if this week is anything to go by, swapping fresh powder for sizzling BBQ’s and a cold beer sounds pretty appealing! Let’s have a look at this weeks infinite highlights…

Last Wednesday an opportunist crew of Verbier locals took to their make-shift stage - namely the roundabout at Place Centrale - to showcase the resort’s exceptional dancing skills in the Verbier Harlem Shake. Seasonaires squeezed into every inch of the roundabout to take part in our version of this year’s viral sensation. The roads and pavements became a temporary arena to watch the locals strut their stuff and people emerged from chalet woodwork to view the strange spectacle. A ski service desk and a pantomime cow could be seen amongst the flailing arms and limbs and as the music got going, dignity went out the window in place of the most outrageous of dance moves. It was recorded from the top of The Farinet and can be viewed here

Those spontaneous afternoons are often the best and a surprise appearance from Martin Solveig at Le Rouge on Friday afternoon certainly backs this theory. As the sun beat down on the packed terrace, the French Electro-House DJ held nothing back, playing an insanely lively set that reeled in a fortuitous gaggle of post-ski fun pleasure seekers. As the euphoric sounds of 2011’s hit track Hello ripped through the snowy airwaves, it was an incredible way to indulge in the weekend warm-up. Verbier is awash with fantastic mountain restaurants but there’s one name that seems to float round with unprecedented enthusiasm. Chez Dany on the Chemin du Clambin is arguably Verbier’s flagship restaurant and simply uttering the name conjures up marvellous images of lunch-time fondues and mouth-watering prawn salads. The sun-doused terrace, impeccable service and picturesque location means it truly lives up to its famous reputation. The Croute au fromage is particularly worthy of note and is their speciality. Melted Swiss cheese oozes onto locally-baked, ham-topped bread and its no wonder reviewers all over (including Condé Nast traveller) rate it. Prices are toward the more costly end of the spectrum but whether it means digging deep into the pockets or eating beans for a week to save some cash, it’s well worth the expense. It’s advisory to book due to popular demand for tables (00 41 27 771 2524), so ring and dig in!

The fun doesn’t stop here and there’s plenty to get excited about in the coming week. This Saturday 9th March sees Sax Maniax return to Le Rouge to showcase their innovative blend of Jazzy Ska. Guaranteed to raise the roof, it’s the perfect way to relax over the weekend so head down from 3pm onwards to be seriously entertained.

If you still haven’t had enough of après – and let’s face it, nobody has – head on down to catch the latest addition to the Aprés Bar's seemingly endless list of talent - On Hale Ice. Swedish by name, Swedish by nature, they know exactly how to get a crowd going and ensure a boozy session with plenty of dancing. Into their 17th year entertaining the Verbier swarm, they mix a pretty perfect set-list of après classics with some brand new numbers.

If you still haven’t seen the Verbier Amatatuer Dramatics take on Aladdin, it’s well worth the visit. What’s more, it’s for charity so for the last viewing get your ticket from the T-Bar or European Snowsports and head on down there tonight (Wednesday 6th March). Who knows, you might even catch another glimpse of the panto horse…

So with more beautiful weather to drench us in sunny vibes forecasted for the weekend, pack the suncream and the BBQ tongs, as it’s all about to get spring-like!

Happy Spring everybody!
