Verbier Activity Review: 18th August 2011

featured in Activity reviews Author Lee Fieldsend, Verbier Reporter Updated

Thankfully the weather over the last week has improved significantly with clear blue skies and sunshine providing dry and warm conditions. Temperatures are warm but there has been a refreshing breeze which has kept things comfortable.

Summer is still in full swing although things are noticeably quieter after the music festival finished. There are still lots of people around town especially as the Verbier horse festival is now in full swing.

A few days ago I went rock climbing at a large crag in the forest past Patier. The crag is a tall pillar of rock that towers over the forest and it has some tough routes but is the closest climbing area to Verbier.

I have also been downhill biking over the last few days and the tracks are in great condition but the dry conditions have turned the mud into fine dry powder so make sure you have tyres and brake pads that are in good condition. On the Blue course there have been a couple of new bumps built around the wooden bridge and there have also been changes on the red north shore so be careful if you are riding runs after even a couple of days. The guys are doing a lot of work most days and with two months of open lifts left there are sure to be more improvements.

I also rode down to La Chable from the Col des Gentianes the other day which saw me drop almost 2000 metres through beautiful alpine valleys and lush green forests.

The recent weather has provided good thermals for para-ponters to get airborne. When the weather is like it is para-ponting is a great way to see the incredible scenery that surrounds Verbier.

In town there is still lots going on with most bars, restaurants and shops open. This Saturday head over to Farinet for Verbier’s Got Talent competition and this evening Coup d’Etat is hosting Wannabe Bar Idol cocktail mixing competition.

The weather over the next few days looks set to continue with warm, dry conditions and sunshine, perfect conditions to enjoy the Swiss mountains.
