Good snow conditions continue in Verbier

Great snow on the pistes and an awesome base

featured in Snow report Author Barnaby Bos, Verbier Reporter Updated

With a top-up of 20cm across the last week, the base remains sturdy and impressive, with 95cm in resort and 350cm at the top of the mountain.

I’ve spent most of my time this week hitting the well-known off-piste routes around Col des Gentiannes and Mont Fort, as well as trekking a little further afield towards Rock Garden and Plan du Fou. Early in the morning, after a fresh snowfall, there has been great skiing to be found on the Mont Fort routes. Knee-deep powder and wide, mostly untracked bowls are always a great combination.

The snow on the main itinerary runs seems to get tracked out quite quickly, so I would recommend skiing them before midday, then moving on to some harder-to-reach places to find some more fresh, clean lines. ‘Rock Garden’ is one of my favourite freeride routes in resort and requires a 5-minute traverse, followed by a 15-minute uphill hike to reach the drop in point over the other side of the mountain ridge. Taking avalanche safety equipment is essential here, as you are well off the beaten path. However, if you’re willing to make the effort, then you will definitely be rewarded with some of the best skiing that Verbier has to offer.

On piste, the conditions are as reliable as they have been all season. There’s a nice 5-15mm layer of fresh snow on top most mornings as the piste groomers do a fantastic job of working through the night to freshen up the slopes. If you want to get the best conditions of the day, then be prepared to be at the lifts early, preferably when they open which is currently at 08:45. At this time, you can expect amazing, clean corduroy, with virtually no tracks on the piste. With such a smooth surface and knowing that it’s unlikely to encounter unexpected bumps ahead, you can really push your speed and ski hard.

As the day progresses, the busier runs begin to turn into small mogul fields, especially the steeper sections where people are putting in stronger and more frequent turns to slow themselves down, thus kicking up and redistributing more snow to create the moguls. The snowpark is in fine form this year, with a marked improvement and extension compared to last year’s. There are lots of different line combinations to be had, with more than a dozen boxes, several decent sized jumps, as well as a beginner jumps section. If you want to push it and try some big tricks. There’s also an airbag, so you don’t have to worry about hurting yourself.

The avalanche warning level is at level 3 currently, which means considerable danger is possible when heading off-piste. The forecast for the coming week is looking very positive, with 20cm predicted to fall overnight on Monday. Wednesday could be a stellar day if the bright blue skies and mild temperatures which are predicted come true. There’s also potentially a further 30cm next Saturday, although it’s worth checking back in later in the week, as forecasts past 3 days in the Alps can be hard to predict. We could end up with more than is currently forecast!

Ski safely off-piste

Exploring beyond the ski resort boundaries is an amazing experience for anyone who's physically fit and has mastered the pistes well enough. There are, however, risks associated with venturing outside the safety of the marked/patrolled ski area, including awareness of your actions on those below you on the slopes. Mountain guides are professionally qualified and have extensive knowledge of the local terrain, to provide you with the safest and most enjoyable possible experience in the mountains; as a visitor here we highly recommend you hiring one. Many ski schools and also mountain guides provide instruction in off-piste skiing, avalanche safety and mountaineering techniques. Make your time in the mountains unforgettable for the right reasons, ski safe!
