The sun shines in Verbier

Good snow conditions and glorious sunshine

featured in Snow report Author Barnaby Bos, Verbier Reporter Updated

The sun has been shining here in Verbier and the slopes are beginning to get a little busier with the incoming February holidaymakers. The lift queues are still minimal but the slopes are definitely seeing more traffic than last week.

That being said, the pistes are still in great condition, with the small addition of around 5cm in total over the past week helping to keep the snow nice and soft on top of the hardpack. It remains the case that there are very few icy run sections around the mountains, and so the skiing is very enjoyable. More or less every run and lift in Verbier is open, giving amazing access to the full 410km of pistes that the 4 Vallees has to offer.

The reds and blues around Savoleyres have a nice 3cm layer of fresh snow on top, which is being moved around and supplemented by the snow cannons and piste bashers every night to leave some perfect corduroy for those who are adventurous enough to be up for first lifts.

The red Combe du Norde and Coeur pistes are, without doubt, my favourite runs in Savoleyres at the moment, both providing beautiful rolling terrain with enough pitch to gain some serious speed and manage some good airtime when flying off the lip of a roller.

As with most of the mountains around Verbier at the moment, the off-piste at Savoleyres is severely tracked out, so it’s probably best to wait until the next snow fall before heading off the beaten track.

I gave the Toboggan run in Savoleyres a try this week, and it certainly lived up to all the hype I’ve heard about it. You can hire sledges from various rental shops in town and head up there either on a sledging-specific lift pass or if you already have a skiing lift pass, you can use that too. Once up top, you can continue to lap the 5km long sledging run several times, likely getting faster and more confident with each try. It’s very exhilarating and a completely different experience to skiing or boarding - definitely an activity I recommend doing to mix things up while you’re here, especially for families or groups of friends. I did it on one of the whiteout days this week and, even though the visibility wasn’t good, we had bucket loads of fun, more so than we probably would have trying to ski about the slopes in such poor visibility.

I also spent a good chunk of my time this week over in La Chaux and down into Siviez. I thought that Tortin might be a struggle given the heavy traffic it's received without much new snow but, towards the far right-hand side, the snow was still very soft and the moguls weren’t too large. This was the same for the Col des Gentiannes itinerary, where similarly the bumps were at their least intimidating the further left or right I traversed.

In La Chaux, the Verbier piste grooming team is continuing to construct more jumps and rails, and so the park has gone from being only three small jumps at the beginning of the season to a much more expansive snow park, with blue, red, and black jumps, plenty of rails and boxes, and also a series of side hits and tabletops.

The forecast is looking promising over the next week, with potentially 20cm of snow arriving Sunday night and continuing until Monday evening. The coldest day of the week will likely be Monday night, with the freezing level plummeting to sea level, and temperatures predicted down to -17ºC. If the snow forecasts are correct, then anyone coming out to Verbier next week should be in for some great snow conditions.
