What's on in Verbier March 2019

As we move into the latter stages of the season, the mountain starts to take a different shape, with rising temperatures and longer days making for softer snow and enjoyable riding conditions.

It’s not uncommon in March to have a few big dumps of snow, followed by blue skies and sunshine, making it a great time to head to the Alps. Couple that with the multitude of great events that Verbier has to offer this month, and you’re in for a treat.

Chauxtime Slopestyle Contest

Every winter, the Tour Freestyle Romand organises a series of freestyle skiing and snowboarding events throughout Romandie, the Western/French speaking part of Switzerland. This year, for the first time, the 13th stage will be held here in Verbier, organised by the Verbier Snowpark and Freestyle Club 4 Vallees. This is an open event, meaning anyone can take part, and participants will be separated into different categories depending on age. Even if you’re not taking part in the event, it’s sure to be an enjoyable day with a great atmosphere, so head over to La Chaux on March 2nd to see some big airs, rails, and impressive tricks.

Ski Colour La Tzoumaz

Another fun event open to everyone, the Ski Colour is taking place March 3rd and costs only 10.-CHF to get involved with. Participants will each wear a white suit and will ski through different zones on the Audi Funslope while being covered in colour powder. Following this, there will be a concert with Funkadonf at the Etablons bar in La Tzoumaz. Last year this was a really fun event for kids and families, and will no doubt be just as fun this time round.

Mardis Gras

While not necessarily a specifically organised event, ‘Shrove Tuesday,’ ‘Mardis Gras,’ or ‘Pancake Day,’ as it’s known, is a big date in the Verbier calendar. Each bar in the evening has a different costume theme, such as Burning Man in Pub Mont Fort this year, and decorate their interiors accordingly. It’s almost guaranteed there’ll be a lot of people out this coming Tuesday night, with the massive party continuing late in the early hours of the morning in Etoile Rouge, Farinet South, Croc No Name, or Farm Club. If you’re heading to Verbier for the nightlife and apres scene, then you definitely don’t want to miss out this Tuesday.

For the second year in a row, on March 16th Bruson will be hosting L'Infernale, a one-of-a-kind skiing race testing your speed and coordination in a crazy obstacle course through the forest. The event begins with a mass start high up the mountain, and features a series of five disciplines: running, super-G slalom, giant slalom, skate skiing and slalom. You can take part either on your own or as part of a team. The obstacles vary in difficulty along the 4.5km course, including a tunnel, a wall of tyres and a forest crossing, and at the finishing line there’ll be a concert, prize giving ceremony, and refreshments, as well as raclette to replenish your energy reserves.

Boss des Bosses

The last two weeks of March play host to two of the best events of the year in Verbier, with the first being the Boss des Bosses, an inter-resort Mogul and freestyle competition where teams from Chamonix, Avoriaz, Meribel, Haute Nendaz and Verbier will race head-to-head to see which resort has the best skiers and riders. This year’s competition will take place on March 20th, and you can expect the atmosphere to be fantastic as usual, with large crowds gathering along the piste and at the bottom to cheer on the competitors and enjoy the music, good vibes, and occasional big crash. Following the event, everyone will head down to Le Rouge Apres Ski Bar to enjoy a DJ set featuring DJ.Niko and the legendary Paul Reynolds, resident at Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel and Hï Ibiza.

Verbier Xtreme Freeride World Tour Final

After competing all over the world, athletes participating in the Freeride World Tour will descend on Verbier between March 23rd to 31st, to see who will be crowned champion of the Freeride skiing and snowboarding world. The competition is intense this year with the Men’s Snowboard, and both the Women’s Ski and Snowboard top three competitors all very close on points going into the final stages of the tour. The competition is weather and conditions dependent, so listen out to hear on the day if the competition is on, and then head to the top of the Jumbo gondola for the best view of the mighty Bec des Rosses, the mountain which the riders will ski down. The energy in town and around resort when the Verbier Xtreme arrives is emphatic, with ski tests, great deals, and parties running late into most nights in the several bars and clubs in resort.
