Verbier Activity Review: 6th October 2011

Hiking & biking the Mauvoisin Dam. Autumnal hiking and some ideas for wet weather activities

featured in Activity reviews Author Lee Fieldsend, Verbier Reporter Updated

After a couple of weeks of great weather it looks as if conditions are going to change this weekend. Clouds, rain and colder temperatures are threatening and the forecast for the start of next week, although better, still suggests mixed conditions.

The lifts will be open this weekend unless the wind gets too high and I would expect lots of bikers to still be around as bad weather just makes things more fun! Lifts are expected to be open until 16:30 both Saturday and Sunday.

Yesterday I went biking up by the Mauvoisin dam at the top of the Val de Bagnes (see map for location). I rode and pushed my bike up hill to around 2400m before resting at the top and taking in the incredible views of mountains, glaciers and the imposing dam. Then I began the long cycle back down to the valley, which took almost an hour, riding through deserted high mountain scenery.

Although the weather is not forecast for greatness this weekend the last week has allowed parapenters, golfers and walkers to go about their business. Don't forget that the sports centre has ice go-karting, ice skating, tennis and swimming when the weather is bad.

As we slip into pre-winter things have quietened down a lot but there are the usual haunts open to eat and drink. These include T-Bar in the centre of town and the café up at Medran and Millennium restaurant which are all great places to eat over your weekend visit.

Whatever you do this weekend make sure that you pack a rain proof jacket and an umbrella and keep your fingers crossed that the weather does not spoil the weekend too much.
